8vo. f. [1] (blank), [4], pp. [5]-188. Calf, gilt boards, elevated gilt spine with red lettering panel. Frontispiece lacking.
First edition, later reprinted as ‘Voyages and Adventures of Fletcher Christian.’ A spurious post-mutiny autobiographical fantasy that has been dubiously linked to Wordsworth (a distant relative of Christian by marriage) and to Coleridge, but is probably only a catchpenny fiction, commissioned by Symonds to exploit the renewed publicity of the 1789 Bounty events, and the recapture and trial of the Tahiti-based crew. See R. J. Howgego, Encyclopedia of exploration: invented and apocryphal narratives of travel. Potts Point, New South Wales, 2013, C27; ESTC, T110736.
